As Uttarakhand is a hill State, about 93% area of its area is confined to slopes having  gradients of varying degrees and therefore has a very fragile ecosystem and is extremely prone to natural hazards – landslides, heavy erosion , flash floods, etc. Besides, Uttarakhand falls under sensitive zone and is therefore prone to earthquakes also.

Geology and Mining Unit is entrusted with the responsibility to assess and provide relevant report regarding the suitability and stability of a particular area for carrying out certain civil work(s) and put forward suggestions to the concerned agency.
