Objectives & Functions
The main functions of the department include mineral exploration, geotechnical work, and mineral administration. The tasks related to mineral exploration and geotechnical studies are carried out by geologists specializing in geological sciences, while mining administration functions are handled by mining engineers specializing in mining technology.
Mineral Exploration Work
Under mineral exploration, geologists conduct field surveys to assess the potential availability of minerals. If preliminary studies yield promising results, rock samples are collected from the area for chemical analysis, petrological examination, and other tests. Mapping of the area is carried out to create detailed geological maps. Additionally, geophysical studies are conducted to analyze subsurface conditions.
If all these studies and tests yield satisfactory results, drilling operations are undertaken using drilling machines to determine the distribution, type, and availability of underground minerals. The quality and quantity of mineral reserves are then evaluated based on these findings.
Mining Administration Work
For the regulation of mines and the development of minerals, the state government grants mineral concessions in accordance with the rules and policies enacted under the provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, legislated by the Central Government.
The state government earns revenue based on the quantity of minerals extracted. Before approving mineral concessions, technical consultations are conducted, and mining plans are reviewed. The extraction of minerals from approved mining lease areas is regulated under the prevailing policies and rules, ensuring environmental and ecological considerations.
Geotechnical Work
Under geotechnical work, the department provides technical insights on land suitability and stability from a geological perspective for various infrastructure projects such as buildings, bridges, roads, canals, drinking water schemes, and power transmission towers. Additionally, the department studies landslide-affected areas and submits recommendations and suggestions to the government/administration for mitigation and protection measures.
The objectives of Directorate of Geology and Mining , Uttarakhand, are as follows:
- To promote local and foreign capital investment in mineral development sector of Uttarakhand.
- To make mineral based information/data and mineral map available to entrepreneurs and for mineral exploration and subsequent eco-friendly exploitation of the mineral resources of the State.
- To encourage the competition in mineral industry through optimum use of mineral potential.
- To provide technical information for scientific development of minerals.
- To incorporate Mineral Administration including grant of mineral concessions, collection of mineral revenue, ensuring systematic and eco- friendly mining, mineral conservation and to minimize the environment damage and ecology of the area.
- To provide supplementary infrastructure facilities for mineral development.
- To ensure geo-environmental protection and assisting Nature in maintaining the ecological balance during and after mining operations.
- To ensure safety and welfare of the people engaged in mining activities.
- To generate employment opportunities in remote mineral bearing areas of the State through mining and geological activities.
